Kids Martial Arts - 7 Tips to be the BEST supporter for your little Martial Artist
1. Be Supportive, Not Pushy
Encourage your child's interest in martial arts without pressuring them. Let them enjoy the process at their own pace, fostering a love for the discipline rather than resentment.
2. Promote Discipline and Respect
Martial arts is built on the foundations of discipline and respect. By reinforcing these values at home, it helps your child understand their importance both in and out of the gym.
3. Encourage Perseverance
Progress in martial arts can be slow and challenging. Teach your child to persevere through difficulties, celebrating small milestones and reminding them that effort and persistence lead to improvement. As someone who trained from age 5 (now 34) I remember very clearly many times when I didn't particularly want to go to training. Training is hard, and It would be much easier and more comfortable to stay home and watch cartoons or play video games. That said, there are times when a child needs a break, or maybe it's not the right fit. Our litmus test for this is simple, do they regularly come out of training unhappy?
4. Foster Goal Setting
Help your child set achievable goals, whether it's mastering a new technique or earning their next belt. This promotes a sense of purpose and accomplishment as they work towards these targets.
5. Show Interest
Take an active interest in your child's martial arts journey. Attend classes, ask about their training, and be present at events, watch fights/competitions together. Your involvement shows that you value their efforts and achievements.
6. Celebrate Successes
Recognize and celebrate your child's successes, big or small. Whether they win a tournament or simply improve in practice, acknowledging their hard work boosts their confidence and motivation.
7. Lead by Example
Demonstrate the values you wish to instil in your child by leading by example. Show discipline, respect, and perseverance in your actions, providing a powerful model for your child to follow.
